The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has opened applications for its ‘Connections Through Gaming’ pilot initiative, aimed at supporting boys aged 11 to 16 who are experiencing loneliness, isolation or social withdrawal.

Up to £773,000 is available for the pilot, including up to £648,000 to deliver a gaming-based programme. DCMS has also set aside up to £125,000 for independent evaluation activities, which will be commissioned separately.

The pilot is intended to combine gaming-based activities with structured wellbeing and confidence-building support, helping participants build friendships and positive social connections. Delivery is expected to take place primarily through in-person activities in youth settings, supported by trusted adults. An online element designed to engage boys who may initially feel less able to participate in face-to-face activities must also be included.

Applications are invited from VCSE sector organisations, Community Interest Companies, Local Authorities, schools and multi-academy trusts. Libraries, youth organisations, community organisations and bodies responsible for the governance and operation of schools may also be eligible.

Applications can be submitted by single organisations or as a consortium, including joint bids such as between a VCSE youth organisation and a Local Authority. The pilot is expected to commence in November 2026 and continue until 31 March 2029.

The deadline for applications is 11 September 2026 (23:59).
