The BFI Film Academy Introductory Course is a free training scheme for young people aged 16-19 who are not currently enrolled in university. This is delivered as part of the BFI Film Academy Yorkshire & the Humber. Over the intensive 7-day course, masterclasses in camera, sound, cinematography, editing and acting, will take place. It is an ideal course for young people who have an interest in a career in filmmaking, but don’t have the resources or contacts to make it a reality.

The course will teach hands-on filmmaking and culminate with the creation of two BFI Film Academy short films. The 20 successful applicants will have year-round opportunities advice professional development and have free access to the BFI player. Alumni of the course have found it to be a really rewarding opportunity in terms of developing new skills and a great insight into how the film industry works. Some of them have gone on to secure work placements at Warner Brothers, BBC and Disney!

We are particularly welcoming of applications from those who are currently underrepresented in the film industry, such as women, BAMER people, those who have a disability and applicants from low-income backgrounds. There is no course fee to ensure that everyone can attend. Additional financial support is available to cover other costs if necessary, e.g. food and travel.
