YWU Y&H, alongside the other Regional Youth Work Units, has a long history of supporting the delivery of UKYP. Over many years, we’ve seen first-hand what young people gain from being involved, from developing confidence, leadership and communication skills to learning how democracy works, representing their peers, and engaging directly with decision‑makers.

We support learning, reflection and improvement in youth voice programmes. If there are young people or communities who haven’t had equal access to these opportunities, then that must be addressed.

But improving something doesn’t necessarily mean losing what already works.

At a time when there is increasing focus on young people’s participation in democracy, and with votes at 16 on the horizon, opportunities for young people to build political literacy, explore democratic processes and experience meaningful participation feel more important than ever.

Whatever happens next, we would be extremely saddened to see the learning, relationships and opportunities created through UKYP lost.

YWU Y&H will continue to work closely with young people, youth workers and local services to ensure young people have access to democratic education and meaningful opportunities to have their voice heard, and to support current Members of Youth Parliament to continue carrying out their campaigns, projects and representative roles.

Most importantly, young people themselves must be at the heart of shaping what comes next.
