The Education Committee launched an inquiry on 22 October into how the education system should prepare young people to be active and informed voters, as the government plans to lower the voting age to 16 in England through the Representation of the People Bill. MPs will examine how schools can inform students about polarising political issues while staying impartial, how they tackle misinformation, and the role of citizenship, PSHE, other subjects and youth settings. Citizenship is currently mandatory from Year 7 to 11, and the government has agreed to extend it to primary school. The inquiry will also draw lessons from Scotland, Wales, Malta and Austria, where the voting age is already 16 or has been lowered.
