Younger people say they cannot progress their chosen careers as they are unable to afford homes in cities where there are more opportunities. Home ownership among younger people has been declining over the past 20 years as a result of high property prices, rising faster than many people’s incomes, as well as higher mortgage rates.

Now, over half (55 per cent) of young people believe the lack of stable housing is prohibiting their access to employment, according to a study carried out by charity Centrepoint. Dr Tom Kerridge, policy and research manager at Centrepoint, said: “It’s clear that many young people feel like their ambitions are being ignored. This is rooted in a feeling that employment support is lacking and access to genuinely affordable housing is nigh on impossible.
