Three-quarters of 11 to 21-year-olds believe Christmas will be stressful for their families due to financial worries, according to a survey by Action for Children.
Nearly 70% think their parents will sacrifice something important to afford presents, while 35% expect their family to be worse off than last year. One in five worry their parents won’t be able to cover household bills.
A third are also concerned about other families in their school or community struggling to afford Christmas gifts. Paul Carberry, Action for Children’s CEO, highlighted the ongoing crisis, saying: “We’ve seen children sleeping on floors and families in tears because they can’t afford food. The hardship doesn’t stop for Christmas.”
