Sadiq Khan has urged the government to agree a youth mobility scheme with the European Union, saying it could save Britain from the “economic storm” of Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs.

The Mayor of London said the scheme—allowing 18- to 35-year-olds to live and work in EU countries for up to two years—is “long overdue” and now an “economic priority” rather than just a political issue.

EU officials view the scheme as key to rebuilding post-Brexit ties, but the UK government continues to oppose it. A spokesperson said there are currently no plans to pursue such an agreement.

Khan argued that deepening ties with Europe is essential to boost growth and protect the UK economy from global shocks.
