n a speech on 5th February PM Keir Starmer announced “much stronger powers for the Charity Commission to shut down charities that promote extremism” as part of plans to be “clearer as a society […] about what we expect of people”.
The first part of the speech was about Peter Madelson, but he then went on to declare the stronger powers. He went on to say that “The changes will be made after a consultation, which will launch in the near future. “We will also look more widely at strengthening the Charity Commission’s powers, to ensure it has the powers it needs to tackle abuse of charitable status.”
