The Government and British Retail Consortium have launched Opening Shift, a work experience programme for 18–24-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET), supporting the retail sector’s ambition to create 100,000 jobs for young people by the end of this Parliament.

More than 11,000 placements will initially be offered by retailers including Tesco, John Lewis, Currys and Costa Coffee. Placements will provide 16–35 hours a week for two to four weeks, with workplace support and interview experience.

Participation will be voluntary through Jobcentres. Universal Credit will continue during placements, with travel costs supported where needed. Participants may then be offered permanent roles, added to talent banks or directed towards apprenticeships and other opportunities.

The initiative is part of the wider Youth Guarantee, backed by an additional £2.5 billion by 2029 to support young people into employment and training. UK Youth welcomed the commitment but stressed that those furthest from the labour market will need tailored support, including help from youth workers to navigate routes into employment.
