The Department for Education (DfE) published its response to the Fostering for the future: improving the foster care system call for evidence in June 2026, Based on 543 responses (mainly foster carers), the DfE reviewed seven reform areas, including financial transparency, a national register, the three‑child limit, DBS checks, allegations processes, innovation, and kinship care. While it supports greater transparency and consistency, it has not committed to major changes like a national register, citing the need for further review. Children in care emphasised stability, better communication, and child‑centred support. The DfE is investing £12.4 million in testing new foster care models.
