the Green Doctor and their Bright Futures_Flyer_Jan 2025 which aims to proactively help some of our most vulnerable residents get off to a good start when moving into their first or new home.

Bright Futures is our newest venture which aims to pro-actively help some of our most vulnerable residents get off to a good start when moving into a new or first home.

For those moving into a new property we offer a Green Doctor visit focussed on new tenants. This will ensure the focus is on setting up the heating system correctly, checking accounts have been opened with accurate meter reads as well as a full Green Doctor visit as per the attached leaflet.

During the visit they will also be given a £50 energy voucher to help them get off to a good start and one of our warm packs which includes blankets, hats, scarves, gloves, socks, a hot water bottle and thermal mug.

We also offer a support package to help prepare vulnerable people for their first homes and help to prevent the initial build-up of energy and other priority debt. This is aimed at key target groups that will benefit from the broad nature of the project.

  1. Care leavers
  2. Young families
  3. Asylum seeker/refugees moving into their first home
  4. ESOL support groups where English is not the first language
  5. People with mental health conditions, such as those who are neurologically diverse
  6. New tenants with vulnerabilities such as low-income, long-term health conditions etc
  7. Low-income students

We aim to help in several ways starting with a development session aimed at helping small groups develop their own Starter Pack from our template. This course can be broken into smaller sessions if necessary. This Starter Pack will cover:

  • What to do when moving into a new home on the first day
  • Setting up the necessary accounts for energy, water, council tax and other things
  • Social tariffs review covering water, mobile phones and Wi-Fi
  • How to read meters and to check their bills are correct
  • Understanding their responsibilities as tenants as well as their rights
  • A benefits check and any guidance required
  • Support with budget planning and payment methods
  • How to deal with problems in their new home
  • Safety in the home around fire and carbon monoxide
  • Guidance on dealing with indoor air pollution
  • Advice on how to deal with damp, mould and condensation

Finally focussing on the local things that they need to know such as

  • Drs surgeries and how to sign up
  • Bin days and recycling
  • Local community centres
  • Food pantries and other cheap places to shop

This would be followed by the Green Doctor visit as mentioned earlier so they will get the same good start.
