This is the latest report from the Bright Spots Programme it was produced by the Coram Institute for Children, the first Independent Research Organisation dedicated to children to mark the 50th anniversary of Coram Voice as the leading national charity for the voice of the child in care and care leavers. The report draws on ten years of Bright Spots survey data, amplifying the voices of over 27,000 children and young people to understand what truly matters for their well-being. They found:

  • Many children and young people are doing well – 2 in 5 of children in care and 1 in 5 care leavers report very high well-being.
  • Yet too many still struggle – 1 in 3 care leavers experience low well-being, and worryingly more young people have low well-being than previously.

Seven drivers of well-being – The report sets out seven drivers of well-being based on statistical analysis and children and young people’s comments. Embedding these drivers into policy and practice is key to making sure all children in care and care leaver can thrive.
