There are 4.7 million people in England who provide unpaid care to family members and friends who are older, disabled, or living with a
chronic health condition. The scale of their contribution is extraordinary: in 2021, the economic value of unpaid care in England was estimated at £152 billion a year—around the same as total NHS spending, and a 30% increase since 20112. Put simply, our health and care ecosystem would collapse without unpaid carers’ support.
