The Childrenโ€™s Commissioner has published new analysis estimating that around ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฎ,๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ-๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ-๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ, ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ โ€œh๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ก๐—˜๐—˜๐—ง๐˜€โ€.

And it raises a really important question. What happened before they got there?
Our research with 1,103 families found that nearly 8 in 10 children were already showing distress, anxiety or reluctance before their attendance became difficult.
School avoidance doesnโ€™t suddenly begin when attendance drops below a certain percentage, and it certainly doesnโ€™t magically disappear at 16.
The Commissioner is calling for young people to be identified and supported before they disengage. We couldnโ€™t agree more. But we need to go further upstream and notice the children who are still attending, but already showing us that something isnโ€™t right.
Because if we wait until theyโ€™ve stopped attending to get curious about why, weโ€™ve waited too long.
