Racially motivated incidents occur both in and out of school, this is often due to media or community influences. To ensure that pupils are aware of the seriousness of racially motivated incidents and bullying it is vital that a whole school approach is adopted.

All staff in schools need to develop their knowledge and confidence on how to effectively recognise, record, report, respond to and prevent racist incidents.

Although it is no longer a legal requirement to report racist incidents to the Local Authority (LA), this is considered best practice as it enables LAs to monitor trends regarding victims, perpetrators, type of incident, local influences and target resources appropriately. Racist incidents and bullying can be reported on KELSI on the Real Time “As it Happens” Survey.
