People in the LGBTQ+ community experience real discrimination and unfairness when it comes to housing. Discrimination can manifest in various ways, including:
- Homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia: Many people face prejudice and aggression from housemates and neighbours.
- Family rejection: Many LGBTQ+ people are kicked out of their homes because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Discrimination from housing workers and service providers: Getting housing is even more difficult because of bias and discrimination in the housing system.
In response to these challenges, Shelter has worked with Stonewall Housing to develop advice and guidance for people in the LGBTQ+ community to fight discrimination and help LGBTQ+ individuals find safe and supportive housing environments.
Here are some of the key resources available:
LGBTQ+ Friendly Renting Advice: Learn about finding LGBTQ+ friendly landlords and navigating the private rental market.
Homelessness Support for LGBTQ+ Individuals: Find vital help on homelessness services and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Fight Discrimination from Landlords and Agents: Understand your rights and how to address what to do about discrimination from landlords and letting agents.
