Education practitioners have been urged to promote the benefits of green economy jobs so disadvantaged young people don’t miss out on careers, says the charity New Philanthropy Capital in its ‘Making Green Jobs Accessible for Everyone‘ report.
Many young people don’t know what a ‘green job’ is. Some think green jobs are low-paid with little impact. 67% believe they need a degree to enter the green economy, raising concerns about accessibility.
The report recommends that schools and careers advisors raise awareness of environmental careers from the end of primary school, and highlight the varied entry pathways available into the sector, including apprenticeships and other non-degree options.
Ben Jackson policy and programmes partner at NPC emphasises discussing job opportunities with young people. They want secure, well-paid jobs with futures. Linking these roles to climate change can broaden access.
